Shooting 11/19/2024
On Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, at 8:05pm, local law enforcement responded to the 2400 block of Browns Store Rd for a subject that was shot. Upon arrival, a male victim was found in the house with a gunshot wound. Family members and law enforcement gave first aid to the victim until EMS arrived. The victim was airlifted to a Richmond area hospital.
During the investigation, Desmond Wiggins, 18, of Lottsburg, was arrested and charged with 2 Felonies: Maliciously Shoot into an occupied vehicle and Possession of an Auto Sear/Trigger Activator. He was also charged with 3 Misdemeanors: Possession of a Concealed Weapon-Firearm, Reckless Handling of a Firearm and Obstruction of Justice. Wiggins is held with no bond pending an arraignment on Monday, November 25, in Northumberland County General District Court. The incident remains under investigation.

Joey Sanford assigned to Detective division
Please join us in congratulating the newest member of our detective division.
Deputy Joey Sanford began is career in patrol here at NCSO in 2019.
Sanford always showed an eagerness to go above and beyond to solve cases as a patrol deputy.
That will serve him well as he starts his next assignment as a general crimes detective.

Caleb Smith Promoted to Detective Sergeant
Please join us in congratulating NCSO’s newly promoted Detective Sergeant Caleb Smith. Since joining us in 2012 Sgt. Smith has work as a patrol deputy, detective, and member of the Chesapeake Bay Narcotics Taskforce. He also runs the Northumberland chapter of Police Explorers at Northumberland High School.
NCSO Accreditation Press Release:
After years of preparation, the Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office is officially an accredited agency.
NCSO received their initial accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission on June 9th at a ceremony in Richmond Virginia and were officially recognized by the Northumberland County Board of Supervisors at their October 13th meeting.
After saying a few words about what it means to be accredited and the rigorousness of the procedure, Chairman of the Commission and Westmoreland County Sheriff C.O Balderson presented Sheriff Beauchamp with the accreditation certificate.
The accreditation standards are broken down into 4 categories. Administration, Operations, Personnel, and Training. The accreditation process requires having policies and procedures that meet 191 standards and then providing 578 proofs that show your agency is following your policy.
Meeting these standards ensures that law enforcement agencies are transparent, accountable, and adhering to state and federally recognized best practices. In short, it ensures the citizens are receiving the best and most efficient service from their law enforcement agency.
During the presentation Sheriff Beauchamp stated that he is very proud of his entire office for this accomplishment. Without buy in from every dispatcher, deputy, and civilian employee this would not have been possible. Going forward the re-accreditation process is every 4 years and keeping the certification will be the hard part, but he has full faith in his office to continue the process for years to come.
